Month: April 2020

April 29th High Plains Library District COVID-19 Update

(Greeley – April, 2020) – The High Plains Library District (HPLD) is planning to open curbside pickup services on May 6. All library facilities across the District will remain closed through the month of May.

“The health and safety of our staff and our patrons are of the utmost importance. We want to give our patrons access to their libraries, but it is imperative we keep our staff safe, as well as do our part to flatten the curve in our community,” said Dr. Matthew Hortt, HPLD Executive Director.

With curbside pickup services opening, this also means patrons will be able to check in their previously checked out materials.

Plans and hours regarding curbside pickup will be posted to www.mylibrary.us/covid-19 shortly.

Patrons will have access to HPLD library facilities in early June. These dates are subject to change based on the guidance of our state and local health professionals.

For the most up to date reopening information, please visit www.mylibrary.us/covid-19.

Storytimes at Home!

Hi! This is Kristin from Erie Community Library!

I’ve written out the general outline for our storytime structure, then put the song lyrics at the bottom. I’ll give you some favorites and then some places to find more songs to supplement. Hopefully you’ve got some books at home, but I’ll also share some links to places to get books online. Screens aren’t the best, but we’re all making do!

Thank you all! Please stay safe and healthy. Let me know if there’s any other way I can support you. I know that our buildings are closed, but libraries are so much more than buildings!

Resources

Songs and Bounces

Jbrary-these ladies have every storytime song basically ever. Their Youtube channel is full of ideas https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnjsY7TmClktuQLNCXXra6Q

Sunflower Storytime-this list has some classic hits by children’s musicians. Some might be more appropriate for toddlers, but I bet a few of you have some toddlers at home too! https://sunflowerstorytime.com/2015/09/22/storytime-music/

Hoopla Digital-This is a resource offered by the High Plains Library District. The checkout limit is currently 16 items a month. You need your library card number to create an account. If you can’t find your library card please let me know. I can’t access the system from home, but I will FIND A WAY! There is some really great music for both kids and adults. https://www.mylibrary.us/stream-and-download/#1482341064245-d9b3c1b9-b061

Noodle & Pals-This Youtube channel will possible drive you nuts, but do it for the kids. Hint-some of the songs are just too slow. I change the speed on the video (via the gear icon in the bottom right corner of the video screen and then “playback speed”) to 1.25 or even 1.5 speed if necessary. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdkj6XH8GYPSlWRvfDZOgcoZ-j8cXU04G

Books

Hoopla Digital-Books too! There are more chapter books, but I see some fun ones for the younger crowd. https://www.mylibrary.us/stream-and-download/#1482341030825-bdf97620-d075

Overdrive/Libby-The other resource from HPLD for eBooks and eAudiobooks. There are fewer picture books and you do have to put items on hold, but it’s worth knowing about. https://highplains.overdrive.com/library/kids

TumbleBooks-Another resource from HPLD. https://login.hpld.idm.oclc.org/login?qurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.tumblebooks.com%2flibrary%2fauto_login.asp%3fU%3dweld%26P%3dlibra

Storyberries-Super cute website. You can play the stories on audio, watch an animated video, or just scroll and read the story. If you are scrolling then I recommend reducing the size of the website so the pictures flow more easily. I shrunk mine down quite a bit and it looks pretty good. Just helps the pictures flow better. I already love “Baby Babble.”  https://www.storyberries.com/category/age-0-3-bedtime-stories/

Five Properly Entertaining International Mystery Shows Streaming on Hoopla

We may be stuck in our homes, but Hoopla can help us see the world. Visit far-flung locales with these international series, and maybe solve a few mysteries while you’re at it!

Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries

This spinoff of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, set in Jazz Age Australia, sends Phryne Fisher’s long-lost niece and heir into the swinging 60s – and a little detective work, of course. Haven’t seen the original? It’s streaming on Hoopla too!

Death in Paradise

If you’re a fan of locked-room mysteries or mysteries with limited suspects, Death in Paradise could be for you. It’s set on a fictional French island in the Caribbean, where a British detective must solve the murder of his predecessor.

The Young Montalbano

Are you a fan of the Andrea Camilleri detective novels? Here’s the Italian-made TV version! Set in Sicily and filmed in Italian (with English subtitles), this is the perfect way to soak up some Mediterranean sun direct from your own couch.

Homicide Unit Istanbul

You’ll be hard pressed to find a more international show than this German-language crime thriller about a Turkish detective in Istanbul. Modern methods and an ancient setting combine into a one-of-a-kind series.

The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries

Dame Diana Rigg stars as Mrs. Bradley in this series, which follows the glamourous detective and her (Rolls Royce driving) chauffeur through the 1920s in Britain. Critics have compared Mrs. Bradley to the iconic Miss Marple – although she’s a bit more daring.
